You need the port shuttle and then a taxi, bus or train to reach the sights; the quarries need a tour.
Where ships dock
- A quay in the commercial port of Marina di Carrara, usually the Taliercio berth. It is a working marble and cargo port with no cruise terminal building; a mandatory port shuttle takes you from the ship to the port entrance.
Getting to town
From the port entrance the Marina di Carrara seafront and beaches are a short walk. Carrara-Avenza railway station is about 2.5 km inland: take a taxi or local bus, or walk about 30 to 40 minutes. Carrara's old town and the quarries are further up the valley.
Trains from Carrara-Avenza run north to La Spezia (change there for the Cinque Terre line) and south to Pisa in about 40 to 50 minutes. For the marble quarries above Carrara and the village of Colonnata, take a ship's tour or a licensed quarry tour: the roads are working haul roads. Taxis are few, so book or queue early.
Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.
