Top 10 easiest ports to explore on your own

Rated Easy, ranked by the shortest walk from the ship our guide gives (the upper end of the stated range).

  1. Kotor Montenegro
“From either landing, the Sea Gate into the Old Town is a 2–5 minute walk.”
  2. Nassau The Bahamas
“Bay Street is right outside the terminal, about a 5-minute walk through Festival Place.”
  3. Tangier Morocco
“The Medina and Kasbah are about 0.5 km, roughly 5 minutes' walk.”
  4. Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) Australia
“From Port of Airlie, Main Street and the lagoon are 5–10 minutes' walk.”
  5. Ajaccio (Corsica) France
“The old town and Maison Bonaparte are about 5–10 minutes' walk.”
  6. Ålesund Norway
“The Art Nouveau center is 2–10 minutes' walk.”
  7. Cartagena (Spain) Spain
“The terminal is in town: the Roman Theatre Museum is about 10 minutes' walk and Calle Mayor 10–15 minutes.”
  8. Cozumel Mexico
“Punta Langosta is downtown: cross the pedestrian bridge and the main square is about a 5–10 minute walk.”
  9. Hobart Australia (Tasmania)
“Salamanca Place is a 5–10 minute flat walk.”
  10. Ponta Delgada (Azores) Portugal (Azores)
“The historic centre is a flat 3–10 minute walk.”

39 Easy ports state a walking time. See all of them in ports you can walk to from the ship.

The 10 hardest: “Book a tour” ports

Rated Book a tour, ranked by the longest distance our guide states to the main town or headline sight (ports without a stated distance come last).

  1. Safaga (for Luxor) Egypt
“Luxor is about 220 km west, 3–4 hours each way.”
  2. Laem Chabang (Bangkok) Thailand
“Bangkok is about 120–130 km away (90 minutes to 2+ hours).”
  3. Aqaba Jordan
“Petra is about 125 km (2 hours each way); Wadi Rum about 60 km (1 hour).”
  4. Falmouth (Jamaica) Jamaica
“Montego Bay is about 18 miles away (roughly 35–40 minutes).”
  5. Dominica (Roseau) Dominica
“Woodbridge Bay is about 1.5 miles from downtown, so take a taxi.”
  6. Antarctica (Expedition Overview) Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetlands
There is no going it alone: every step is run by the ship's expedition team.
  7. Belize City Belize
The city itself has limited attractions. Belize's highlights (caves, ruins, reef) are an hour or more away, so a tour is easier.
  8. Colón (Panama) Panama
Highlights are spread out, and Colón city has safety concerns. Tours make the most sense.
  9. Labadee Haiti
Can you do it on your own? Not in 2026: there are no calls. Royal Caribbean has replaced Labadee stops with other ports or sea days, and June 2027 is the current end of the suspension, not a confirmed reopening.
  10. Le Havre (Paris & Normandy) France
Paris and the D-Day beaches are far. Tours are the safer choice.

Methodology

  • Source: Get Port Savvy's port guide data (219 guides, last checked Oct 2026), each built from published sources cited on its page.
  • Ratings (Easy, Moderate, Book a tour) are editorial judgments based on distance from the pier to the main sights, reliability of local transport and time needed to return to the ship. Homeports aren't rated.
  • Walking times and distances are taken from the text of each guide; where a range is given, we use the upper end. Kilometres are converted to miles (1 km = 0.621 mi).
  • Dock vs. tender comes from each guide's “Where ships dock” list.
  • Pier assignments and conditions change. Always confirm with your cruise line.
