You need transport out of a working port, and the city is best seen with a guide or planned route.

Where ships dock

  • A berth in the Port of Dar es Salaam, the Tanzania Ports Authority's working cargo port south of the city centre. There is no cruise terminal building; you can't walk out through the cargo areas, so take the port shuttle to the gate.

Getting to town

From the gate the city centre (the Askari Monument, St Joseph's Cathedral and the Kivukoni fish market) is about 4 km, roughly 10 to 20 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.

Ship's shuttle, tour or taxi. Bolt and Uber work; agree fares for street taxis. The State Department advises against dala-dala buses, bajaji three-wheelers and motorcycle taxis. Zanzibar is about 2 hours each way by fast ferry: too tight for most calls.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Tanzanian shilling (TZS). U.S. dollars are widely accepted at tourist sites; cards work at larger hotels and restaurants (often with a fee). ATMs are often out of order.

Entry: U.S. citizens need a visa: the U.S. tourist visa is multiple-entry, US$100, valid 12 months. Apply on the official e-visa portal (visa.immigration.go.tz) or get one on arrival; ask your cruise line how it handles entry. Passport valid 6+ months with blank pages. Visiting Zanzibar also requires Zanzibar's mandatory travel insurance (US$44 per adult). (Embassy of Tanzania / U.S. State Department, checked Oct 2026.)

  • Don't photograph police, the military, government buildings, bridges or the port.
  • Dress modestly away from the beach.
  • Plastic carrier bags are banned nationwide.
