The port is far from the sights, so plan on a taxi or tour, but Old Goa and Panaji are easy to combine with a driver.

Where ships dock

  • Mormugao Port cruise berth, Vasco da Gama. The new cruise terminal building is still unfinished (work restarted in 2026, with a 2027 target), so facilities are basic

Getting to town

Vasco da Gama town is about 4 km from the berth. Goa's highlights are farther away: Panaji (Panjim) is about 30 km and Old Goa about 30 to 35 km, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road each way. Use the port's taxi or tour desk and agree the price before you leave.

Taxis are the practical option. Hire a car and driver for the day for Old Goa and Panaji, and agree the waiting time and total fare first. Local buses aren't practical on a port day.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Indian rupee (INR). Carry small notes for taxis and markets; cards work in larger shops and hotels.

Entry: U.S. citizens need a visa. The e-Tourist Visa (apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa) is valid for arrival at designated seaports, and Mormugao is one of them. The 30-day e-visa fee for U.S. citizens is US$10 (Apr–Jun) or US$25 (Jul–Mar) plus bank charges. Apply at least 4 days before arrival and beware look-alike sites. Safety & tips

  • The U.S. State Department rates India Level 2 (Exercise increased caution); Goa is not in one of its Level 3 or 4 areas. It advises women not to travel alone.
  • Strong currents cause drownings at Goa beaches every year, and lifeguards are rare. Swim only where it's posted as safe, and never during the monsoon.
  • Have your e-visa printout and passport with you ashore.
  • Dress modestly in the churches: cover shoulders and knees.
