Athens on your own is very doable by metro, but it's a 30–45 minute trip each way plus crowds and heat at the Acropolis.

Where ships dock

  • Piraeus cruise terminals A, B and C (Terminal B/C near Gate E12 is far from the metro)

Getting to town

Piraeus is Athens's port. A free internal port shuttle links the terminals with Gate E7, where the metro station is. From Terminal A it's a 15–20 minute walk.

Metro Line 1 (green) toward Kifissia to Monastiraki takes about 20–30 minutes; walk up to the Acropolis from there. The X80 express bus (OASA, seasonal May–October) stops at the cruise terminal exits and goes to the Acropolis and Syntagma about every 35–40 minutes. Taxis to central Athens are reported around the mid-€20s.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for small purchases.

Entry: U.S. passport required. ETIAS (the EU travel authorization) is NOT yet in operation: the official EU site says no applications are being collected and a start date will be announced several months ahead (checked Oct 2026). Don't pay any site claiming to sell ETIAS now. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) does register non-EU travelers' passports and biometrics at Schengen external borders.
