The town is walkable from the tender, but the big draws (El Limón waterfall, Los Haitises, the best beaches) are far away and easiest with a tour.

Where ships dock

  • Tender port: ships anchor in Samaná Bay
  • Tender landings on the Santa Bárbara de Samaná waterfront (malecón)
  • Some itineraries tender straight to Cayo Levantado island instead (ship excursion)

Getting to town

Tenders land right on the town waterfront. The town center is about a 5–15 minute walk along a flat, paved promenade.

Taxis wait near the tender docks. They are unmetered, so agree the fare first; fares vary. Many drivers speak little English, so have your destination written in Spanish. Motoconchos (motorbike taxis) are cheap but riskier. For El Limón waterfall or Los Haitises, most cruisers use a tour.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Safety & tips

  • Tender rides take time. Check the last tender time and don't cut it close.
  • Use licensed taxis (roof sign) and agree on price and return time first.
  • Whale-watching season is popular. Book ahead.

⏰ Back to the ship on time

Allow for tender lines on top of travel time. Plan to be at the tender dock at least 45–60 minutes before the last tender.

Ship time can differ from local time. Your ship won't wait for independent travelers.
