Stunning, but cable-car queues and the tender make timing tricky.

Where ships dock

  • Tender port: tenders land at Fira Old Port (Skala) below the cliffs
  • Athinios port (some passengers; since June 2026 up to 30% may land here)

Getting to town

From the Old Port, reach Fira on top of the cliff by cable car (about 3 minutes), on foot up 588 steps, or by donkey. Oia is about 25 minutes by road from Fira.

Cable car lines can be very long on busy days. Buses run from Fira to Oia; fares and times vary. Athinios landings use coaches up the hill.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for small purchases.

Entry: U.S. passport required. ETIAS (the EU travel authorization) is NOT yet in operation: the official EU site says no applications are being collected and a start date will be announced several months ahead (checked Oct 2026). Don't pay any site claiming to sell ETIAS now. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) does register non-EU travelers' passports and biometrics at Schengen external borders.

Safety & tips

  • Go ashore early to beat cable-car lines.
  • The steps are slippery and shared with donkeys.
  • Bring sun protection; there's little shade.

⏰ Back to the ship on time

Join the cable-car line down at least 60–90 minutes before the last tender.

Ship time can differ from local time. Your ship won't wait for independent travelers.
