You need a taxi into the busy city, but Gorée Island is a short ferry ride from the port.

Where ships dock

  • Môle 1 in the Port Autonome de Dakar, a working commercial port, next to the Gare Maritime (the Gorée ferry terminal)

Getting to town

You walk 200 to 500 m through the port to the gate on Boulevard de la Libération. Place de l'Indépendance, the heart of the Plateau district, is about 1 to 1.6 km away: walkable, but hot and busy, so most people take a taxi (about 5 minutes).

Taxis wait at the port gate: agree the fare before you get in, and pay in cash. The State Department says the regulated taxis are generally safe and advises avoiding cars rapides, motorbikes and public buses. For Gorée, the ferry (chaloupe) leaves from the Gare Maritime next to the port: about 20 minutes, with departures every hour or two (buy tickets at the Gare Maritime or on dakargoree.sn; non-residents pay a higher fare). The Pink Lake (Lac Rose) is a long half-day by tour.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF). Few places take cards, so carry cash; ATMs in the centre take U.S. cards but are not always reliable.

Entry: U.S. citizens don't need a visa for stays of 90 days or less. Your passport needs six months' validity beyond arrival and a blank page. Yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk (it is recommended for everyone by the CDC); check with your cruise line. Safety & tips

  • The State Department rates Senegal Level 1 (Exercise normal precautions; advisory dated Dec 1, 2025), but warns that street crime is common in Dakar and robberies occur on the Corniche Ouest. Don't walk alone on beaches or after dark.
  • Dress modestly: Senegal is a mostly Muslim, fairly conservative country.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink.
  • Gorée ferries can be postponed in heavy swell; check the return times before you go.

⏰ Back to the ship on time

Gorée ferries run every hour or two, so check the return times when you buy your ticket and take one that gets you back at least an hour before all-aboard. Dakar traffic is heavy: allow plenty of time from the city.

Ship time can differ from local time. Your ship won't wait for independent travelers.
