A tender and a short uphill walk to town are easy; seeing Skye's landscapes needs a tour or careful bus planning.
Where ships dock
- Anchor in Portree Bay and tender to the passenger pontoon beside Portree's main pier
Getting to town
Tenders land at the harbour, under the row of painted houses. Somerled Square, the town centre, is about 0.8 km away, uphill with some steps, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Pier repairs are planned through March 2027; follow the harbour team's route.
Buses leave from Somerled Square, not the pier. Stagecoach 57A/57C loop round Trotternish (Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Staffin) but run only every couple of hours, with fewer on weekends. Portree has few taxis, and on ship days they are usually booked in advance. For Dunvegan Castle or the Fairy Pools, book a tour.
Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.
Money & entry
Currency: British pound (£). Contactless cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Entry: U.S. citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling, including on cruises that call at UK ports. It costs £20 on GOV.UK (beware look-alike sites charging more), lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, and since Feb 25, 2026 carriers must refuse boarding without one. Apply on GOV.UK or the official "UK ETA" app. (Checked Oct 2026.)

Safety & tips
- Pre-book any taxi or private tour; don't expect to find one on the day.
- Download the bus timetable before you go ashore: mobile signal is patchy on parts of Skye.
- Bring waterproofs and boots with grip. The Storr path is steep and often muddy.
- Tenders depend on the weather, and calls are sometimes cancelled.

⏰ Back to the ship on time
Tender queues can be long in the last hour. Be back at the pontoon at least 45 minutes before the last tender, and don't take a bus that returns close to that time.
Ship time can differ from local time. Your ship won't wait for independent travelers.
