The State Department rates Kenya Level 3 (Reconsider travel) for crime, terrorism, kidnapping, unrest and health: a ship's tour or a vetted guide is the safer way to see Mombasa.

Where ships dock

  • The Kenya Ports Authority cruise terminal at Kilindini Harbour (Berths 1 and 2), a modern solar-powered building with immigration, duty-free shops and a restaurant

Getting to town

Fort Jesus and the Old Town are about 3 to 4 km from the terminal, roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car depending on traffic.

Ship's tour recommended. Otherwise use a pre-booked driver or Uber or Bolt; the State Department advises against hailing taxis on the street and against matatu minibuses and boda-boda motorcycle taxis. Safaris to Tsavo are long, rough road trips: only on an organised tour.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Kenyan shilling (KES). U.S. dollars are widely accepted, but only notes issued after 2014 and in good condition. Cards work at hotels and larger shops.

Passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages. Show a yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic country. (U.S. State Department, checked Oct 2026.)

Safety & tips

  • U.S. State Department warning: Kenya is rated Level 3, Reconsider travel, due to health, crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and traffic safety (advisory issued Oct 19, 2026). It says do not travel (Level 4) to Lamu and Tana River counties (except Tsavo National Park), Kilifi County north of highway C103, coastal areas north of Malindi, and Nairobi's Eastleigh and Kibera, among other areas. Mombasa is outside those zones, but check any tour north along the coast. The CDC has issued an Ebola travel health notice for Kenya. Read the advisory before you go ashore.
  • Don't display jewellery, phones or cash; robberies from motorcycles are common.
  • Avoid demonstrations, which can turn violent.
  • Use only U.S. bills printed after 2014.
