Take a shuttle or taxi up to the Plateau; State Department rates Praia Level 2 for crime.

Where ships dock

  • Porto da Praia cruise terminal at the Cais Acostável: ships usually berth alongside (taxis wait at the exit)
  • Sometimes ships anchor and tender instead

Getting to town

The Plateau, Praia's historic centre on a hilltop, is roughly 1.5 to 3 km from the berth. You can walk it in 20 to 25 minutes, but the route is along a main road, uphill and short of shade. Most lines sell a shuttle that drops near Praça Alexandre Albuquerque (5 to 10 minutes).

Take the ship's shuttle or a taxi to the Plateau and walk from there. Taxis are cheap: agree the fare first (euros are usually accepted). There is no Uber. For Cidade Velha (about 15 km), hire a taxi for the round trip or take a tour. The U.S. Embassy advises avoiding the minibuses (aluguers), which have no fixed routes and are overcrowded.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Money & entry

Currency: Cape Verdean escudo (CVE). Euros are often accepted in tourist businesses, usually with change in escudos; carry small notes.

Entry: U.S. citizens don't need a visa for stays of 30 days or less. Cabo Verde requires pre-registration on the official EASE platform at least 5 days before arrival; cruise passengers should check with their line, which normally handles clearance (U.S. State Department / ease.gov.cv, checked Oct 2026).
