Most ships berth beside a compact old town, though its best sights are uphill.

Where ships dock

  • Alto Fondale, the preferred cruise quay next to the historic centre
  • Calata Italia (normally the ferry quay) when Alto Fondale is taken
  • Some ships anchor and tender into the old harbour

Getting to town

From Alto Fondale the old town is close to the passenger exit. The Medicean harbour and the Porta a Mare gate are flat, but the streets climb steeply to the forts and to Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon's town residence. From Calata Italia, the ferry quay, it's a longer walk round the harbour.

Walk the old town. Taxis start at €15 one way to Villa dei Mulini (municipal tariff), a help if you don't fancy the climb. Autolinee Toscane bus line 1 goes to Villa San Martino, Napoleon's country house (about 6 km); other buses go to Porto Azzurro and Capoliveri.
