Where ships dock

  • Portsmouth International Port cruise terminal, George Byng Way (PO2 8SP), shared with cross-Channel ferries

Getting to town

The port is a working ferry terminal north of the city center, not walkable sightseeing. Portsmouth & Southsea station is about a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive; the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays at The Hard are about 3 km south.

Taxi rank outside the terminal. Local buses (First and Stagecoach) serve the port; the park-and-ride stops at Rudmore roundabout, through the underpass. National Express coaches stop at the port. Trains run direct from London Waterloo.

Money & entry

Currency: British pound (£). Contactless cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Entry: U.S. citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling, including on cruises that call at UK ports. It costs £20 on GOV.UK (beware look-alike sites charging more), lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, and since Feb 25, 2026 carriers must refuse boarding without one. Apply on GOV.UK or the official "UK ETA" app. (Checked Oct 2026.)

Safety & tips

  • Long-stay multi-storey parking at the port is £13 per 24 hours (official port rates); pre-booking is strongly advised.
  • Portsmouth Harbour station is near the Dockyard but is not the cruise port; allow a taxi or bus between them.
  • Have your booking reference ready at the port gate: access is for travel only.

⏰ Back to the ship on time

For embarkation, aim to arrive at your allotted check-in time; allow extra time on busy ferry departure mornings.

Ship time can differ from local time. Your ship won't wait for independent travelers.
