The ship docks in the marina below town, and everything in Horta is a short, flat walk.

Where ships dock

  • Horta cruise terminal on the Marina da Horta breakwater, Horta Bay (270 m berth for ships up to about 230 m); bigger ships anchor in the bay and tender into the marina

Getting to town

You step off into the marina, right below the historic centre. The port authority puts downtown about 500 m away: Peter Café Sport and the seafront are a flat 5 to 10 minute walk, and no shuttle is needed. The terminal has tourist information, toilets and a taxi rank.

Taxis wait by the terminal and are the easy way to reach the Caldeira (about 15 minutes by road) or the Capelinhos volcano on the west tip (about 40 minutes). Agree the price or a fixed island loop before you set off. Whale-watching boats leave from the marina itself.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.

Safety & tips

  • Pico, Portugal's highest mountain, faces the harbour: clouds often lift in the morning, so take your photos early.
  • Whale-watching and a Caldeira–Capelinhos loop each take half a day; don't try to fit both into a short call.
  • Add a square to the marina murals only if you're sailing your own boat: they are the yachties' tradition.
