The State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3 (Reconsider travel), and the port is a shuttle and taxi ride from everything: a ship's tour keeps you on the ship's schedule if plans change at short notice.
Where ships dock
- The cruise terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, a converted ferry terminal (2021) inside Saudi Arabia's largest cargo port. An internal port shuttle of about 10 minutes runs between the ship and the terminal; you can't walk out.
Getting to town
Al-Balad, the historic old town (UNESCO), is about 4 km from the port, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car. The Corniche and King Fahd's Fountain are about 10 km north of the port.
Ship's tour recommended. Uber and Careem work and are metered in the app; ships sometimes run a paid shuttle to Al-Balad or the Corniche. Mecca is closed to non-Muslims.
Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.
Money & entry
Currency: Saudi riyal (SAR), pegged at 3.75 to the U.S. dollar. Cards are widely accepted in the city; outside it, carry cash.
Entry: U.S. citizens need a visa: apply for the Saudi tourist e-visa before you travel, or get a visa on arrival, for a fee. Passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages. Many common prescription medicines need advance approval through Saudi Arabia's Controlled Drug System. Ask your cruise line how it handles entry. (U.S. State Department, checked Oct 2026.)

Safety & tips
- U.S. State Department warning: Saudi Arabia is rated Level 3, Reconsider travel, due to the risk of drone and missile attacks on American interests by Iran and the Iranian-supported Houthis, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and laws on social media activity (advisory issued Oct 12, 2026). The Yemen border is Level 4 (Do not travel) for any reason; Jeddah is far from it. Don't photograph or post about missile or drone interceptions: U.S. citizens have been detained for it. Read the advisory before you go ashore.
- Social media posts critical of Saudi Arabia, even old ones, can lead to arrest. Alcohol, pork and drugs are illegal.
- Dress modestly: loose clothing covering elbows and ankles is recommended for everyone; men may be refused entry in shorts.
- Don't photograph government buildings, police, women or people without consent.
