A charming old merchant town, but it's a shuttle or taxi ride from the wharf.

Where ships dock

  • Kominato Wharf, Sakata North Port, about 6 km from the old town (no terminal building)

Getting to town

The old town is about 15 minutes by car. Use the ship's shuttle or a taxi (the quay has a large taxi pool). On ship days there are temporary toilets, a kiosk, an information desk and a U.S.-dollar exchange desk, but no rain shelter.

The sights of the old town (Sankyo rice warehouses, Homma family house, Somaro) are within about 1.5 km of each other and flat. Mt. Haguro (Dewa Sanzan) is a long trip by train and bus: only for long calls, or take a tour. A driver you book yourself needs a city gate permit applied for days ahead.

Fares are as reported by the sources below and change often. Treat them as estimates.
